Mod.70 pre.64 .338WM "ALASKAN" by W.J. JEFFERY & C°, London.
WINCHESTER
Rifles
Category : C
Caliber : .338 Winch. Mag.
In a superb condition, manufactured in 1959 and chambered for the brand new .338 Winchester Magnum[1], this is a rare version of the "Rifleman's Rifle", the legendary WINCHESTER model 70, pre-64 "Alaskan".
This rifle has the particularity of having been prepared, shot and regulated by W. J. JEFFERY & C° in London in the very early sixties, just before Holland & Holland took control of the company, which justifies some seldom encountered specifications.
If the 25 "barrel retains its original sights such as the Lyman mod.16 folding rear sight and the mod.31 front bead under sliding protector, the stock made of nice American walnut (juglans nigra) has had its length brought to the more continental 14¼" LOP by the addition of a 1" walnut extension and an original English Silver's red soft pad. Obviously these modifications have been made with the meticulous care that characterizes the London gunsmith while the rifle has been proofed in England.
The mat satin finished receiver (.458" short magnum)[2] is fitted with a superb GRIFFIN & HOWE mod. 1932 fully steel machined side mount whose 26mm rings support an HENSOLDT Wetzlar "Diasta" 2¾ x 21 R1 scope in perfect condition and with incredible optical clarity. Leather protections remain present.
All parts of the rifle and its accessories are machined steel and are blued.
The stock, without cheek piece, slightly Monte Carlo, is made of nice American walnut, and retains perfect factory checkering.
This rifle is in an exceptional state of preservation, with a superb bore and a tight action.
Besides its rarity[3] in this version, chambered for one of the best modern "medium bore" cartridges, and associating the best features of the proven Mauser 98' controlled feeding system to the smoothness and balance of a modern rifle, that WINCHESTER is the perfect “Classic” choice for world wide hunting on the five continents.
This "Alaskan" rifle weighs 8lb. unscoped and 9lb. 3oz. with the HENSOLDT glass mounted and, indeed, it bears our full guarantee.
[1] Winchester developed the .338 WM cartridge in 1958, being tailor-made for use in its model 70. In mid-1959, Winchester introduced the .338 chambering for the model 70 with a new and unique 25" barrel, announcing it to the world in mid-year flier that designated the rifle an “Alaskan” model.
[2] This rifle is all factory correct with a ".458" short magnum receiver, which was not offered by Winchester until mid-1959.
[3] Only 9,525 Pre 64 Model 70’s in .338 Win Magnum were produced, making up only 1.6% of the total production, which is pretty rare.
