Mod. 1903 Custom Sporter
SPRINGFIELD
Rifles
Category : C
Caliber : 30-06 GVT
Interesting US custom sporter based on a mod.1903 SPRINGFIELD.
The original action has been knowledgeably modified with a new forged and lowered bolt handle, a lighter striking and a remarkable work on the original trigger system giving a lightweight and safe 1lb let off.
The original perfect bore 24" barrel has been elegantly re-contoured and fitted with a stylish banded front sight.
The receiver is pre-drilled and 6-48 tapped to accept a LYMAN diopter and it bears a monobloc base equipped with REDFIELD differentiated 1" rings holding a period WEAVER KV 5x with cross-hair reticle.
The whole is mounted in a thumbhole "Californian" stock made then by PMC [1] in Sun Valley, California.
The 14¼" LOP thumbhole stock, typical of the sixties, is very well done and finished with gimmicks characteristic of the Californian style of the time: "skip a line" checkering and white spacers. Carved in a good light colored blond walnut, it is nevertheless elegant and extremely practical, without the latter excesses of large trapezoidal forend and inverted comb drop.
Anyway, in spite of an optic of the same age, this rifle shoots remarkably well and would shame many modern productions.
In working order, scoped, that custom .03 weighs 9lb 5oz
