1938 pre-64 Mod.70 .270WCF
WINCHESTER
Rifles
Category : C
Caliber : .270 Winchester
This Winchester Model 70 rolled off the factory assembly line in New Haven in 1938, the second year of production for this model.
The rifle is chambered for the famous .270 WCF [Winchester Center Fire], an iconic caliber introduced in 1925 by the prestigious American firm.
The cloverleaf receiver and bolt are of the first type, as is the safety specific to this pre-war model.
The front sight ramp and the traditional rear sight boss are machined from the 24" nickel-proof steel barrel blank.
The 14" LOP classic stock, without cheekpiece or Monte Carlo effect, is made of American black walnut (Juglans Nigra). It is remarkably well finished with a wide pattern of perfectly executed checkering.
The curved buttplate is made of steel, checkered and blued.
On its left side, the receiver features an elegant, custom-machined, base for an original Griffin & Howe Model 1932 scope mount.
Within its 1-1/16" one-piece rings this all-steel mount supports an Hensoldt Wetzlar Dyalitan 4x scope with special post-and-dot reticle. Elevation adjustment is made via the scope's upper turret, while on the mount rear side a calibrated knob controls windage. Both adjustments are then locked in place.
The scope and mount are in near-mint condition, and various range tests with 130-grain cartridges have demonstrated the rifle's exceptional accuracy and perfect stability of the sights.
A beautiful Lyman 48WJS diopter sight regulated on the Lyman 31W gold bead front sight, protected by the original sliding tunnel, provides the iron sight line. When the Hensoldt scope is mounted, a machined steel slide replaces the Lyman 48 removable part.
The rear sight has been replaced by a blank slot that protects the dovetail machined into the barrel support.
This pre-1964 Winchester 70 was exported to England before the war, as evidenced by the Birmingham proof marks and the "Not English Made" marking, required between 1925 and 1954 on imported firearms by the British Proof Act.
The rifle has been partially and meticulously restored in our workshop using traditional methods and is presented in superb condition.
The tight action, the absolutely perfect bore, the crisp trigger set at 3lb-8oz, and the overall operation and accuracy are beyond reproach.
With open sights, this magnificent rifle weighs 9lb-1oz and 10lb-5oz when scope fitted.
It is rare to find a 70 pre-64 manufactured before 1940 in such a state of preservation on the Continent.
